YOU'LL struggle to find a harder-working 12-year-old than Greenvale tennis player Madeleine Williams.
The wannabe tennis professional is clocking up her on-court hours and was recently recognised by Tennis Victoria with its talent development award for April.
In addition to five hours a week at Melbourne Park with Tennis Victoria's talent development program, Williams spends another seven hours on court in training and matches.
It may seem like a big workload but the Greenvale Tennis Club player is eagerly meeting the challenge.
"It's hard, we spend a lot of time there on the court and doing gym work," she said.
"It's definitely helped my fitness, we get put through some really hard drills. I've been able to rally longer and become more consistent."
Williams is one of the older players in the talent development squad and said there was pressure among her peers to improve their games. "This is my last year with the academy, I want to try to get to a quarter final at an age event or even a final by under-14s. I've definitely got to improve my serve."
Williams is working hard with the academy and her one-on-one coach Anthony Guccione to improve her court coverage and footwork.
A recent road trip to Ipswich, Queensland, for the 12-year-old clay court nationals was an important learning curve for Williams. She was knocked out by fourth-seed Olivia Tjandramulia in the third round, having already taken out the 16th seed.
The performance will continue Williams' climb up the Australian rankings, up to 574th in the country this month.
Williams will play A-grade 1 for Greenvale Tennis Club this winter.
