HUME City Falcons booked a grand final date in Victorian Netball League after an eight-goal win against former bogey side Monash University Central last week.
An injury-hit Hume City team overcame a Monash team twice its conqueror in the minor rounds 52-44 after opening up a close match with a burst early in the final quarter.
Hume City now advances to the August 7 grand final where it will meet the winner of tomorrow night's preliminary final between Monash and North East Blaze.
Division 1 regular Amy Wirth stepped up to play goalkeeper for the championship side last week in the absence of injured duo Casey Price (foot) and Vikki Bester (achilles).
Falcons coach Marg Lind said Wirth played well as the team became comfortable with its new-look defensive structure.
Lind said few turnovers and a Monash team far less scrappy than the previous meetings meant few opportunities presented for either team to break away.
Scores were level at half-time before Hume City turned its one-goal three-quarter-time advantage into a match-winning lead with a burst at the start of the fourth quarter.
Hume City goalers Tegan Caldwell and Lara Hickmott got the better of Monash defenders Kara Richards and Kate Yensch to break open the game.
"I think we looked good from the outset and the big issue was getting separation between our [attacking] players," Lind said.
Elissa McLeod was important for Hume City at wing defence while centre and wing attack Christie Barnes and Jacinta Todd improved on previous performances against Monash to lift the mid-court.
Hume City's division 1 team will have to play Southern Saints in the preliminary final tomorrow night after losing 38-40 to Boroondara Genesis in the qualifying final.
Hume City's under-19s advanced
