Falcons pay the price for slow start

16 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
HUME City Falcons were brought back to earth with a nine-goal defeat last week in Victorian Netball League after a poor start against Monash University Central.

Monash moved to the top of the championship ladder with two wins from two, courtesy of the 48-39 victory, while Hume City is back to a 1-1 record after the first fortnight.

Falcons' coach Marg Lind was in no doubt as to where her team fell apart, saying poor preparation cost it dearly as it gave up 10 of the first 12 goals.

Playing catch-up netball for the rest of the night, Hume closed to within two goals on regular occasions and within three in the last quarter, only for Monash to pull away again.

"The team was not very accountable with the way we warmed up," Lind said. "They weren't intense enough which converted into a slow start."

Lind was occupied during the warm-up on the bench with Hume City's division 1 team at the time. It had a 55-34 win.

"We chased down the eight-goal deficit to get within one or two but we spent a lot of energy against a quality team.

"We really didn't convert opportunities and it was more that we didn't get the ball into the ring. It was a yo-yo game for us, a poor game across the board to be honest."

After using fill-in player Kristen Hughes as a goal shooter the previous week, Falcons' Cynna Kidd made her first appearance of the season on Wednesday but was out of sync with fellow goal shooter Lara Hickmott.

"We've replaced Tegan Caldwell with Cynna [Kydd] and she's going to take six or seven weeks to settle in to the goaling end," Lind said.

"We had 12 errors feeding goaler to goaler alone. It needs tightening up, it's difficult in the first couple of weeks without any breathing space to establish that combination."

Goalkeeper Peta Fay was one of the better Falcons players on Wednesday.

Hume City will play Geelong Cougars in its third round match tomorrow at 9.40pm at the State Netball and Hockey Centre.
