LOU Acevski's goalkeeping heroics helped Hume City advance to the Victorian Premier League preliminary final after a 2-0 win against Heidelberg United at the weekend.
A first-half double from Hume at Epping Stadium on Saturday reversed its fortunes after an elimination final loss, setting up a clash with minor premier Richmond for a crack at Green Gully in the grand final.
Acevski came to the fore in the second half, denying a number of Heidelberg chances to walk off with a hard-earned clean sheet and a finals victory for his team.
A six-minute spell in the first half got Hume the rewards for a combative opening and improved showing on its defeat against Green Gully the previous week.
Zoran Petrevski played through Alfonso Opazo to net the opener. Towering striker Turhan Sumbul made his height count as he headed truly on 34 minutes to double the lead.
Heidelberg was the aggressor thereafter, with Steven Pace, Isyan Ergodan and Tansel Baser performing admirably under siege in the Hume City backline.
But it was the last line of defence, Acevski, who kept Hume City's two-goal advantage.
"There were a couple of certainties [for Heidelberg] in the six-yard box," Hume City coach Andy Vlahos said.
"Lou's experience came to the fore, palming the ball away out of nowhere. When we were vulnerable at the back he made wonderful saves to keep us in the game.
"We started much stronger, controlled the midfield battle and got rewarded with two goals."
Green Gully advanced to the grand final with a 2-1 win against Richmond on Friday, the Eagles drew 1-1 with Hume City back in April and lost 1-0 to Hume City in July.
"They're a quick team and we're not going to match them running, we've got to use our experience and can't let our guard down," Vlahos said.
Hume City's preliminary final against Richmond will be played at Knights Stadium in Sunshine on Sunday.
