WESTMEADOWS continues to prove the doubters wrong after a stunning nine-goal opening term set up a 49-point win and eliminated Tullamarine from Essendon District Football League B-grade finals at the weekend.
The Tigers' 21.9 (135) to 12.14 (86) triumph came off the back of 57 first-quarter points, almost triple the 3.12(30) they put up for the entire game against Pascoe Vale in the previous week's qualifying final.
The victory has advanced Westmeadows to a rematch with the Panthers, while Tullamarine's season is finished.
Pascoe Vale lost a thrilling second semi-final to Taylors Lakes by four points on Saturday, 13.8 (86) to 12.10(82).
Westmeadows coach Anthony Leyden said he didn't have to do much to get his team to respond to its qualifying final defeat, with the players' belief critical to the strong start against Tullamarine.
Roden Aldridge booted five goals, Michael Kilty returned from an ankle injury to boot three while Adam Turner and Nathan Valentine also snared three majors each.
"Our ruckman Scott Gilliland was the most dominant, our stoppage work was a lot better and generally we were first to the ball," Leyden said.
"We were switched on and committed the whole day. Daniel Callegari was solid in the backline and some of our young players like [Chris] Hoban, [Daniel] Willcocks and [James] Palmer took it to another level."
Turner played off half-back for much of the Pascoe Vale game but a swing forward proved critical in a five-goal-to-one third quarter that ensured there would be no Tullamarine comeback.
"Not to be cheeky but we were very confident all week, probably helped by the fact Tullamarine were thinking about Pascoe Vale and Taylors Lakes and we were thinking about Tullamarine," Leyden said.
"Every game is different and finals in particular. We go into the [Pascoe Vale] game not overly confident but expectant nonetheless. It's a case of delivering in the pressure of finals football, we were certainly able to pick up on some chinks in Pascoe Vale's armour and we're setting ourselves for the challenge."
In the second semi-final, Taylors Lakes advanced to the grand final but not before blowing a lead as high as 31 points against a Pascoe Vale team that lost two players to injury before quarter-time.
The Panthers' biggest lead in the final quarter was eight points, before Taylors Lakes snared victory with Steven Rizzo's go-ahead goal at the 20-minute mark.
The B-grade preliminary final will be played at ABD Group Stadium, Coburg City Oval, at 2.15pm on Saturday.
