ONE point was the difference between a double chance and potential finals elimination for Westmeadows at the weekend as it held on to victory against Glenroy.
The 11.8 (74) to 10.13 (73) victory puts the Tigers in third on the Essendon District Football League B-grade ladder with one round to play and only an unlikely combination of results capable of removing it from the double chance.
Jarrod Fenton's goal midway through the final term was Westmeadows' only major of the quarter but was enough to keep Glenroy at bay as it attacked the wind-assisted end.
Westmeadows had exploded out of the blocks with a 30-point quarter-time lead only to be slowly reeled in by Glenroy through the afternoon.
But the Wallabies never hit the front.
Nathan Valentine was Westmeadows' best with six goals while Adam Turner kept Glenroy spearhead Aaron Kite to two for the afternoon.
Rodney Carruthers was Glenroy's best, along with Joel Mansfield and Joseph Sayers.
"It was a pretty brave effort to repel the challenge from Glenroy who had it all to play for," Westmeadows coach Anthony Leyden said.
"They had nine shots on goal in that last quarter but we hung in there and found something extra. We weren't looking to save the game, we kept looking to kick another goal. It's easy to say in hindsight but the harder you work sometimes things go your way."
Leyden said his team had come through a training overload in recent weeks and would now focus on performing in finals.
Westmeadows will only give up third place this weekend if it either loses to Hadfield by 140 points or more, or loses to Hadfield and Tullamarine makes up 35 percentage points in beating Moonee Valley.
"There are a few guys that may go out, we will be cautious."
