EDFL: Tullamarine Demons fight back

08 Jun, 2010 05:00 AM
TULLAMARINE will spend the Essendon District Football League mid-season break safe in the B-grade top five after overrunning Sydenham Hillside to win by 17 points at the weekend.

The 14.9 (93) to 11.10 (76) win keeps Tullamarine two games clear of the desperate race for finals as its six-and-two record keeps it third, ahead of Pascoe Vale on percentage. Sydenham Hillside took the initiative on Saturday as it led by 19 points at half-time, only for Tullamarine to unleash a six-goal third quarter.

Scott Grainger was critical in the comeback and went on to finish with seven goals, while Russell Laurie was the only other Tullamarine multiple kicker with two.

Danny Rajab and Justin Marcy were Tullamarine's midfield engine that won the clearance battle and set up the win.

"They started well and we made a lot of mistakes, turning the ball over, silly free kicks," Tullamarine coach Ash Manning said.

"In the third quarter we regrouped with a slight breeze and played well. The last quarter was goal for goal, we got about three goals up by the 20-minute mark and the game finished in pitch black and torrential rain."

Tullamarine took no risks and rested Daniel Sinnott who will return from a hamstring after the mid-season break.
