EDFL: Scott Lucas steers Jets home

03 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
GREENVALE powered away from Oak Park to record its second consecutive first-against-second Essendon District Football League win at the weekend as it stormed home by 35 points.

Scott Lucas' four final-quarter goals and bag of seven led the scoring in the Jets' 20.8 (128) to 13.15 (93) win.

Victory maintained Greenvale's one-game lead from Keilor at the top of the A-grade ladder.

A qualifying final berth seems a near certainty as the Jets hold a two-game lead from third-placed Oak Park with three home-and-away rounds left.

Lucas' bag of seven moved him to 50 for the season, while lead up forward Jacob Thompson kicked four goals. The duo were named first and second best.

A lively Ray Harrison kicked four goals for Oak Park but the team's missed shots at goal in the third and final quarter ultimately cost it any chance of building a big lead.

Greenvale had led by as many as 26 points in the second term before a late Oak Park burst in the quarter set up a third term where it would kick five goals to three and fight to the lead.

An early goal-for-goal exchange was put to an end by six unanswered Greenvale majors to finish the match.

Rhys Johnson found space to run and carry all afternoon while fellow youngster David Sardo also won a heap of the ball, as did Vincent Randello.

The main negative for Greenvale was Rhys Bloomfield leaving the game in the third quarter and needing crutches to keep off an injured ankle.

Lucas said the team had made some tactical adjustments after defeat to Keilor in round 13 sparked a form revival.

"Keilor showed us up in quite a few areas, in many respects we went back to the drawing board and looked at how we were going about it. We changed things up and we've kept teams guessing a bit, that's why today went so well."

Lucas said while the signs in the last two games had been good, there was still plenty in reserve for September.

"The success of this season is really dictated by how we perform in finals. We're going to play these teams again and need to learn as much about them as they already know about us. We'll keep our cards close and see how we line up come finals time."
