EDFL: Oak Park Into A-Grade Top Four

24 Jul, 2011 03:26 PM
EAST Keilor relinquished top spot in Essendon District Football League B-grade to Tullamarine with a 22-point defeat away at Westmeadows on Saturday.

The Cougars’ 14.9 (93) to 17.13 (115) loss at Willowbrook Reserve was just the second East Keilor defeat for the season but still enough for Tullamarine to claim top spot on percentage.

The Demons’ 12-and-two, 198 per cent record leads Bgrade from East Keilor (177 per cent) while 11-and-three teams West Coburg and Pascoe Vale remain within a game of the minor premiership.

Michael Spooner was busy in the first half for East Keilor in front of goal and would finish with eight majors for the day, but a greater spread of goalkickers kept Westmeadows in the contest.

East Keilor led by 16 points at half-time but gave up six third-quarter goals to trail by one goal at three-quarter-time.

The Cougars drew level with the first major of the last, but Westmeadows kicked away thereafter.

Nathan Valentine kicked six goals for Westmeadows while Nathan Ohlsen and Robert Mullen booted three each.

‘‘We gave them (Westmeadows) a sniff early and to their credit they persisted all day,’’ East Keilor coach Steve Kolyniuk said.

‘‘All their good players played well. If you look at their form, they’ve been competitive at home all season.

‘‘We’re always wary and we don’t take any game too lightly. You try to move on, we’d won nine in a row and three or four of those were tough games where we got over the line.’’

East Keilor faces a tough run of West Coburg (away), Pascoe Vale (home) and Roxburgh Park (away) in its final three games of the season.

‘‘To get the double chance (top two) we’ve probably got to win two of the next three games,’’ Kolyniuk said.’’

‘‘If we can’t do that we’ll probably stagger into the finals.’’

**

OAK Park withstood a first-quarter onslaught from Keilor to overturn a 25-point deficit and win by 37 in Essendon District Football League Agrade at the weekend.

The 17.18 (120) to 13.5 (83) result moved the Kangaroos into the top four at reigning premier Maribyrnong Park’s expense, while all but eliminating Keilor from the finals race.

A goal after the final siren from Ed Clarke was enough to tip a tight percentage battle for finals places in Oak Park’s favour as the Kangaroos claimed third as the best nine-win, four-loss team in the league with 155.90 per cent ahead of Greenvale (155.36) and fifth-placed Maribyrnong Park (151.65).

The trio remain within a game of ladder-leading duo Strathmore and Aberfeldie on 10wins and three losses each.

Keilor exploded out of the blocks with the first four goals of the game, dominating the centre square to get target forwards Marty Pask and Jarrod Garth on the board early.

But Oak Park gained a foothold in the match thanks to a dominant midfield display from Sam Higgs, while Ray Harrison’s two goals closed the margin to just one straight kick at quarter-time.

Oak Park attacked the corridor for much of the first quarter and met resistance from the Keilor defence, but a wider run and spread in the second and third quarter opened up more scoring chances. The Kangaroos would squander opportunities though, kicking 3.8 and a few out on the full between time-on of the second quarter and the end of the third.

Keilor’s scoring opportunities were few and far between, but a dashing goal on the run from Matt Pearce late in the third term kept the Blues within 13 points at the last change.

Oak Park would take control on the scoreboard in the final term though, with Tom German kicking three of his four goals for the day.

Joel McDonald’s run off half back was important for Oak Park, while taller defenders Steve Shaw and Marc Lord were vital in denying Keilor goals.

On-baller Dylan Joyce fought hard for Keilor while Pask ended up the Blues’ top goal-kicker with three.

‘‘We tried to get different things happening (up forward),’’ Oak Park coach Phil Plunkett said.

‘‘Keilor put numbers back and we played into their hands by bombing it in.

‘‘We had plenty of the ball and Keilor’s run dried up. We knew our fitness would get us through the game.’’

‘‘Destiny is in our hands. It’s down to five places and Maribyrnong Park will be trying to get back in.’’

Harrison finished with four goals for Oak Park in what was his fifth senior game of the season.

‘‘Hopefully he’s got plenty more to give,’’ Plunkett said.

‘‘He’s that x-factor for us. We’ve been working with him on the defensive side of his game.’’
