ALAS, the sequel was just as one-sided as the original. Westmeadows bowed out of Essendon District Football League B-grade finals with just 19 points on the scoreboard and a 46-point defeat to Pascoe Vale.
Just a fortnight after kicking 3.2 (20) against the Panthers in the qualifying final, Westmeadows failed to trouble the scorers after half-time as it fell 9.11 (65) to 3.1 (19) at Coburg City Oval.
A range of incidents in a firey first half had Westmeadows captain Roden Aldridge in the book twice and sensationally ordered from the field by the umpires at the start of the third quarter to sit out the rest of the game. Having been jumped by early Pascoe Vale goals in the first quarter, Westmeadows made a fist of the contest with a second-quarter double to James Palmer and goal to Robert Mullen closing the gap to just 14 points at half-time.
But that was as close as Westmeadows would get, with Pascoe Vale's Corey Bannister and Brad Morris winning the ball regularly in the Panthers' forward line and making it count.
Westmeadows struggled to break the lines and escape its own defensive half and spent much of the third and final quarter struggling to clear defensive 50m.
"You can't be too critical, we didn't play our best football but the effort was there and that's all you can really ask," Westmeadows coach Anthony Leydin said. "We just weren't good enough. We played on emotion, belief and confidence at times, but we're probably half a dozen players short of challenging the top teams."
Leydin will continue as Westmeadows coach next year for a second season after this year's campaign which he has regularly described as one that proved the club's doubters wrong.
"On reflection, in the context of the whole year, it's been one of great achievement."
Pascoe Vale will take on Taylors Lakes in the B-grade grand final, at Windy Hill from 2.15pm on Saturday.
