Costly miss for Blues

31 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
GREENVALE survived a kick from Jarrod Garth after the siren to cling to victory and win the Essendon District Football League A-grade major semi-final by two points at the weekend.

Garth had a difficult set shot from almost 50m out after the siren to steal the game for Keilor but failed to score, the Blues losing 14.12 (96) to Greenvale 15.8 (98).

Missing was cruel for Garth, whose eight-goal haul made him the clear best-on-ground. He kept Keilor in the game when Greenvale threatened to run away on numerous occasions.

Greenvale advances to the A-grade grand final with the victory while Keilor must back up this weekend against Maribyrnong Park, who defeated Oak Park in the elimination final.

Garth was one of the key players resurrecting Keilor's hopes in the final quarter, having earlier booted four first-quarter goals to keep the Blues in the contest.

Greenvale's skill level was superior in the opening stages as it opened with the first four goals, Keilor having to battle until the 18th minute before putting a major on the board.

But Garth's lead-up presence in the forward line, and the midfield combination of Keilor ruckman Markham Johnson with onballers Rodney Van Riet and Rhett King, wrestled the margin back to just five points by quarter-time.

Greenvale's midfield unit contributed evenly. The move of James Rohan into the backline was critical in stopping Garth from returning a double-figure bag of goals.

Joe Gazzo popped up with three final-quarter goals to boot four for the day, while Jacob Thompson's third of the afternoon made the margin as high as 15 points in the late stages of the final term. Having survived Keilor's final surge, Greenvale will now sit out this weekend as Keilor takes on Maribyrnong Park at Windy Hill on Sunday.

Maribyrnong Park was a class above Oak Park in the elimination final at Coburg City Oval, winning 15.14 (104) to 10.12 (72). Marc Bullen set the tone for the Lions with three first-quarter goals and five for the match, while a string of missed opportunities in the third term left Oak Park behind on the scoreboard in spite of controlling a 10-minute period of the contest.
