GREENVALE got within two wickets of what would have been a priceless outright victory against Williamstown CYMS in Victorian Turf Cricket Association north division at the weekend.
The 12 points earned by the commanding win has still done a power of good for Greenvale's finals chances though, boosting the club to seventh on the ladder. Beaumaris (68.85) holds fourth with Greenvale on 61.75 points.
But two more wickets on Saturday would have closed the gap even further had the CYMS not held on eight down following on.
Greenvale's 249 the previous weekend proved far too many for the Williamstown bats to chase, bowled out for 104 in the 58th over in the first dig.
The CYMS were 8-93 off 24 overs following on before stumps was called.
Chathura Darshana was the best of the Greenvale bowlers, 7-45 in the first innings and 3-43 in the second.
In north division, Westmeadows threatened a lower-order miracle but ultimately fell 30 runs short of Sunshine United.
Chasing 204 for victory, Westmeadows was 8-98 before Andrew Prescott (25) and Dominic Bulcock (52) dug in. Bulcock and Michael Pearce (seven not out) put on 44 for the final wicket before Westmeadows fell for 173.
The Warriors are still within a point of the top four in spite of the loss, with fourth held by Keilor Park (62.13) from Strathmore (61.54) and Westmeadows (61.45).
Tullamarine is back in the finals picture after David Zahorodni (5-32) and Chris Kenney (3-15) inspired victory by bowling Keilor Park out for 92 in reply to 225. Tullamarine has 60.97 points in seventh on the table.
