GREENVALE took a big stride away from the relegation dogfight after a 66-run win against StBernards OC in Victorian Turf Cricket Association Senior Division at the weekend.
The big win helped Greenvale leapfrog the Snowdogs and climb to ninth in the 12-team division where the bottom two go down at season's end.
Greenvale may have lost 7-41 after the first 85 of its innings was unbeaten, but the wickets kept coming as St Bernards struggled to 137 in reply to 9-203.
The 10.19 points Greenvale claimed in the win have boosted it to 38.76 in ninth on the table, ahead of St Bernards on 36.52 and relegation zone teams Royal Park-Brunswick (32.64) and Williamstown CYMS (23.48).
Tarek Moughanie (55) and Matthew Innes (34) guided Greenvale to 85 after winning the toss and batting, only for both openers to be gone by 2-94.
Glen Courts (38) and Jeremy Brown (28) kept the scoreboard ticking over, but both went within a run of each other as 2-161 became 4-162.
St Bernards' Craig Osborne claimed 7-31 as the Snowdogs took six more Greenvale wickets for 29 runs in the closing stages. Chris Spinella (69) was St Bernards' rock to build the innings around but he received little support with only Gary McIntyre (29) passing 20.
After the Snowdogs reached 3-103 in the chase, a burst of four wickets for eight runs put Greenvale firmly in control. Chatura Dashana (3-26) and Jacob Thompson (3-57) were best of the bowlers while Jeremy Brown claimed 2-22.
In North Division, Westmeadows' pursuit of runaway ladder leader Keilor received a boost as the former beat Footscray United and the latter lost to Doutta Stars.
Keilor was undefeated in the pre-Christmas period but lost on Saturday to move to 65.22 points on top, still some way ahead of the second-placed Warriors on 53.26 points.
Westmeadows bowled out Footscray United for 157 off the back of 5-43 from Glen Lambeth before reaching the target with seven wickets in hand. James Campbell (71) and Michael Butera (57) shared a 114-run stand for the first wicket as Westmeadows posted 5-189 off its full 40 overs.
At Tullamarine, the home team restricted Old Essendon Grammarians to 6-152 before making 5-161 in reply.
In North A1, Jacana (7-138) lost to St Albans (8-145).
