CRICKET'S version of the penalty shoot-out - the bowl-off - was kinder to Broadmeadows than Altona in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association's Legends and Heroes Twenty20 at Sewell Reserve on Tuesday night.
The Falcons claimed a 2-1 bowl-off victory over travelling A's with slow-medium bowler Ben Rose taking the wicket that sealed his side's passage into the finals with an undefeated record.
Falcons secretary Pas Sciulli admitted it was a "weird" way to determine the outcome of a washed-out match.
"That's the best way to describe it," he said. "The Altona boys travelled a long way for five balls and a
10-minute game. It was reasonably well received and our boys were pretty happy with the win."
The A's led the bowl-off until Falcons playing president Ben Wood squared the ledger. It was Rose's accuracy with the fifth and final ball that catapulted the Falcons into the finals.
The Falcons Twenty20 team was superbly led by Michael Young.
Vice-captain in the longer form of the game, Young is considered a future captain at the Glenroy Road club.
"We went with a young Twenty20 line-up," Sciulli said.
"It gave us the ability to observe Michael in the position as he may be a future captain.
Young let his batting do the talking with a half-century in the opening match against Yarraville.
Quality all-rounder Mitchell Streiff is expected to play a massive part in the Falcons quest to win the Twenty20 title.
Two players who will be missing from the outfit are Papua New Guinea imports Steven Eno and Tony Ura, who will be playing in the under-19 world cup.
