Early wobbles put dent in Eagles' score

03 Nov, 2009 04:00 AM
IT was a constant battle for Craigieburn to jolt their innings into action on their travels to East Keilor's Overland Reserve in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1 on Saturday.

After losing the toss and being forced to bat, the Eagles were in hot water from the get-go with opener Anthony Ormando and Scott Robinson returning to the pavilion without troubling the scorers and the scoreboard reading 2-1.

For all their efforts to post a big score, the Eagles consistently lost wickets and would find themselves all out in the 60th over with 182 on the board.

That score could have breached 200-plus if one of John Woodgate (29), Glen Baker (23), Darren Portou (39), Andrew Kilpatrick (43) or Hayden Brown (20) turned their flying starts into even bigger scores.

Their efforts to lead the Eagles recovery at least gave their bowlers a score to defend.

East Keilor was 3-71 at stumps, requiring 112 more runs to win with seven wickets in hand.

The first XIs of all other locally based VTCA teams were washed out. Play will resume on Saturday.

The Twenty20 action is hotting up in the north division. The Jacana Lions had to take the long route via the first round and produced a breathtaking five-wicket victory over Footscray United on the road at Scovell Reserve.

United won the toss and batted, posting a competitive total of 116 in 19.3 overs.

Three wickets to Lions bowler Glenn Groves and two to player-coach Janaka Siriwardene thwarted United's run flow. The Lions raced to the target with five wickets in hand and five overs to spare to underline their intention to be a major player in the limited-overs competition.

Adrian McDonald blasted the ball to all sections of the ground en route to 52 and Telge Peiris contributed a quick-fire 36 not out.

The Lions are drawn to host senior division outfit Keilor in the second round at Jacana Reserve.

In other second-round ties, Greenvale will make the short trip to Airport West-St Christophers and Tullamarine will make a similar journey to Parkvilla District for do-or-die clashes. Venues and times are still to be determined.
