ALLEN White was expecting a lot more kangaroos when he arrived in Melbourne, but after the initial disappointment the American basketballer is determined to be an Eagle.
Craigieburn has landed White, 25, in a coup for its finals hopes in Big V division two this season.
White chose Australia as his preferred destination for his first stint playing overseas because of the enthusiasm shown by Craigieburn's recruiters.
The point guard had played four years with Huntingdon College as well as Premier Basketball League with the Battle Creek Knights and American Basketball Association with Detroit Hoops. White was thrown into the Craigieburn mix in a recent practice match, going down to division one team Whittlesea.
"It didn't really matter if it was Europe or Australia.
"I emailed Craigieburn, they said yes and I agreed."
White said the competition was at a good level, but that he would have to adjust to the Australian referees and game style. "In Australia there's a lot more team ball.
"Players use their teammates a whole lot more, passing the ball around, and that's something I'll have to get used to.
"I've joined a pretty good team, they've made me welcome, and I want to win a championship with them."
Craigieburn's Big V delegate Colin Downing said White's professional nature and good record in the US had given him the edge on other imports the Eagles were looking at. "He said he wants to get his name known in Australia.
"Even after 27 hours in the air he was keen to get out there and get some game time with his new teammates."
■Craigieburn has appointed Darrell Eyre to be its division one women's coach this season. The former Whittlesea coach has lived in Craigieburn for a number of years and said it was the right time to switch clubs.
"We've been in preseason since mid-November and we're working well as a team. We're in a good competition and want to be competitive this year."
