ONE match-turning possession was all it took for Geelong to give Hume City the slip and grab a seven-point winner in game one of the Big V women's championship grand final at the weekend.
Hume City overturned a 10-point half-time deficit at Broadmeadows Basketball Stadium to lead in a shot-for-shot final quarter but ultimately lost 69-76.
Geelong now takes its one-game advantage back to The Arena for this weekend's game two on Saturday, and a game three decider should Hume City exact revenge.
The Lady Broncos were attacking in the last minute down by two when a turnover forced by Geelong's Kylie Morrissy resulted in a fast break.
Hume City's Ellie McLean sprinted back to force a contest on the lay-up, but was called for an unsportsmanlike foul as Morrissy made the basket.
Geelong retained possession after the foul shot, with Hume City having to foul again and send the Cats back to the free-throw line where there was no mistake.
"They hit those two shots, seven points, game over," Hume City coach Brian Vaughans said.
"I was very confident we were going to win, the game was back-and-forth, whichever team got the break and had the luck on their side, that's what it was going to come down to." Morrissy finished with 19 points for Geelong as did Anna Teague, while Madeleine Taylor scored 18 and Candice Rogers hauled in 15 rebounds.
Hume City's top scorer was Tenille Cann with 21 points (at 64 per cent from the field) while Samantha Rioli scored 16 and Ana Marinovic bought down 14 boards.
Vaughans said his team defended sternly but some inspired Geelong shooting turned low-percentage shots into regular points.
One area Hume City let the game slip was its free-throw shooting, going 8-17 for the night.
"I think our team recognise they're a lot closer to beating Geelong than people think," Vaughans said.
Game two of the Big V women's championship grand final tips off at The Arena in North Geelong at 8pm on Saturday.
If Hume City ties the series on Saturday, game three will be held at the same venue at 3pm on Sunday.
