Westmeadows fire threatened homes

31 Jan, 2012 02:58 PM
RESIDENTS in three streets threatened by a grassfire in Westmeadows were evacuated from their homes last Tuesday evening.

It took two hours for 70 firefighters to control the 40-hectare blaze.

Fifteen fire trucks were at the fire, which threatened 20 homes in Westmeadows about 6.30pm. Back fences of several houses were burnt.

''Even this close to central Melbourne, bush and grass fires are a reality and people need to be fire ready,'' MFB Deputy Chief Fire Officer David Youssef said.

A 15-hectare grassfire at Flowerdale, which was ravaged by the Black Saturday fires three years ago, was also brought under control.
