TULLAMARINE residents will be the first in Hume to have access to the high-speed National Broadband Network.
The new fibre-optic broadband, with internet speeds up to 100 megabits per second (Mbps), will be available at 8300 premises in the suburb.
Tullamarine was one of only seven sites in Victoria announced by NBN Co. last week in its 12-month national rollout plan.
NBN Co spokeswoman Rhonda Griffin said Tullamarine was chosen because of its proximity to a network exchange.
The service was likely to be extended to other areas in Hume once the initial service was set up.
"Once you have core infrastructure in place you tend to add more modules and grow out from that area," she said.
"We plan to update every three months so when the next lot comes out there should be more in that area."
Construction will start in May next year. It is expected to take 12 months from the start of the network rollout until residents can receive the high-speed NBN service.
The NBN could cost customers less compared to ADSL2+ which is used by most residents in Tullamarine.
A study by price comparison website WhistleOut found broadband at speeds of 12Mbps could make cost savings of 23 to 43per cent compared to ADSL2+.
Hume Council chief executive Domenic Isola said the rollout was a good development for residents and businesses.
"The social and economic benefits that this rollout brings are important in supporting Hume's continual advancement as one of Melbourne's most energetic growth corridors," he said.
"The extension of this high-speed fibre-optic cable to Tullamarine reflects the importance of the northern suburbs in urban growth planning for Victoria."
When the network is ready to use, home and business owners can purchase broadband packages from one or more of the 28 retail telecommunications providers that will offer the service.
