A SPATE of work-related deaths in Hume has sparked a warning from WorkSafe urging employees to avoid distraction and remain vigilant at work in the lead-up to Christmas.
The warning follows the fatal injury to two men within a week in separate workplace incidents in Hume.
On November, 25 a man was killed in a warehouse in Westmeadows after he was pinned to the wall by a truck.
It is believed the man, aged in his 40s, reached into the driver's side of the truck and turned on the ignition when it rolled forward, pinning him to a wall about 8.25pm.
Another man was killed in Campbellfield on December 1 at a boat manufacturing business when a 150-kilogram piece of machinery fell on him from an overhead crane.
WorkSafe spokesman Michael Birt said both men were experienced workers and aware of safety procedures.
"There can be an element of complacency that creeps in and short cuts can be taken. We need employers and managers to understand they have the legal responsibility for safety in the workplace."
Mr Birt said that while WorkSafe inspectors were targeting industries in Melbourne's west, they would also continue to target a range of industries across Hume, including food manufacturing and processing, wood product manufacturing, fabricated metal and transport equipment manufacturing.
From July 2006 to June 2011, 7789 claims were made, totalling $174,365,400.
These were the highest figures in the northern municipalities.
