Permits go through the roof

10 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
BUILDING activity in Hume increased by more than 30per cent in the past financial year compared with the previous year.

In the municipality, 2256 building permits were issued in 2009-10 for commercial, domestic, hospital/health care, industrial, public buildings, residential or retail buildings compared with 1674 the previous year - a 34per cent rise, according to figures released by the Building Commission.

A total of 113,670 building permits, worth $23.9billion, were issued across Victoria in the last financial year.

"Hume Council is content with the level of investment that is currently occurring in the municipality, in both the public and private sectors," sustainability director David Keenan said.

"Council staff will continue to facilitate larger investments that create employment, while also ensuring that sustainable design is taken into account with regard to new applications."

The release of the figures comes after State Parliament last week approved the expansion of the urban growth boundary

to include up to an additional 43,600 hectares of developable land in Melbourne's boundary. This would mean significant population growth in Hume, particularly Broadmeadows and Sunbury.

Planning Minister Justin Madden said the figures showed strong growth in domestic, industrial, health care and public building permits year after year.

Building Commissioner Tony Arnel said a remarkable fact in the 2009-10 financial year was that in eight of the 12 months the value of building permits issued exceeded $2billion.

"These strong levels of activity were spread right across the financial year, including the last two months," Mr Arnel said.

Hume's building boom was in August and October last year when building permits worth $57.1million and $58.4million, respectively, were issued.
