BROADMEADOWS residents are furious about Hume Council's decision to ban all parking on residential streets around Isik College during peak school times.
Parking will be banned in Nathalia, Girgarre, Cobram and Lilliput streets and Tongio Court from 8-9am and 3-4pm on weekdays.
The council introduced the ban at its meeting last week due to concerns about the safety of children crossing the streets surrounding the school and after receiving complaints from residents about traffic congestion.
The restrictions will operate for a three-month trial period.
People who refuse to move their cars during the peak-hour times will be fined by traffic monitors.
Les Devine, who has been living in Cobram Street for 37 years, said he couldn't understand why residents living in the streets surrounding the school couldn't be exempt.
"This is a great inconvenience to the residents because they have to move their cars during those hours twice each day," he said.
"They should give us stickers to put on our cars and fine the people who park on our side [but] who don't have a sticker."
Rasim Aslankol, who lives in Lilliput Street, said he didn't know where he would move his work truck during the restricted times.
"My truck doesn't fit in the driveway, so I have to keep it on the road," he said.
"On my days off I'll have to get up to move the truck and I'm afraid to do that because my tools could get stolen quite easily."
But Cr Adem Atmaca said that if cars were parked on both sides of the streets only one car could pass through, causing traffic strain and safety concerns.
"Implementation of traffic management in this street is long overdue, because kids can't see where cars are coming from if both sides are blocked," he said at last week's council meeting.
"Permits for residents won't work because they'll park there during school hours."
Robyn Madden, a resident of Lilliput Street for 36 years, said she would not pay if fined by traffic monitors.
