AITKEN College teachers have received a commendation for teaching life skills to students over a decade.
Last week, federal Minister for Mental Health and Ageing Mark Butler congratulated the school for having undertaken a MindMatters program for that period.
MindMatters is a national mental health initiative for Australian secondary schools, established in 2000 and implemented by Principals Australia since its inception. It's aimed at increasing a school's capacity to implement mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention.
Josie Crisara, principal of the Greenvale prep to year 12 college, said it ran the program once a week for each year level.
"The program looks at a whole range of well-being issues, from healthy lifestyle to harm minimising, to mental health," Ms Crisara said.
"Bullying hasn't been a problem here, but it's all about the school being a safe place for people to be. It's important the kids are feeling safe here and are happy to come to school."
While the program focused on reducing bullying and increasing student attendance,
Ms Crisara said it had also given the students a chance to take part in meditation and yoga and learn about healthy eating.
