HUME police are warning parents and children in the municipality of 'stranger danger'.
The warning comes after a Dallas boy was approached by a stranger as he was playing in his front yard on August 21.
The 11-year-old was playing alone when the man, who was holding a bag of lollies, approached and asked the child to come towards him.
The frightened child ran back to his his house and the man sped off in a small yellow car.
Detective Sergeant Paul Berry, of Hume's crime investigation unit, said the child did the right thing.
But he feared other children might not do the same.
"I fear kids generally aren't wise in situations where they are approached by strangers," Detective Sergeant Berry said. "This particular incident is an important reminder for the community to educate kids about stranger danger."
Detective Sergeant Berry said he had not come across any similar incidents in the past 12 months.
"It was an unusual occurrence and we're still keen to catch up with the bloke who approached the boy," he said.
"I think parents will be very concerned to hear about this incident."
The man is believed to have a dark complexion and dark, spiked hair with a rat tail.
He is believed to be 170cm tall and in his 30s.
Information to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
