THE number of smokers in Hume is almost 12 per cent higher than the state average, a snapshot survey shows.
The state government's Victorian Population Health Survey, released last week, shows 49.1 per cent of Hume's adults are smokers, compared with the state average of 37.2 per cent.
The survey of 7500 adults showed the municipality also had a high rate of overweight people and those who were obese.
Overweight male numbers reached 31.5 per cent, while 28.6 per cent of females were overweight.
A total of 26.8 per cent of males and 20.1 per cent females were classified as obese.
Dianella Community Health clinical director Ralph Audehm said the most shocking figure was the number of people who did not eat vegetables.
Only 4.6 per cent of males and 10.9 per cent of females had the appropriate vegetable intake.
"I'm really surprised at the low intake of vegetables," Dr Audehm said.
"It shows more people are probably eating takeaway foods regularly. I think cost may have something to do with it. As adults we do model behaviour for our children. It's important our children see us eating and enjoying lots of vegetables."
He said smoking would be an easier issue to tackle than obesity.
"We know smoking is really hard to give up, but the thing is to keep trying. There is such good support out there.
"It's a little bit harder with obesity because of the environment we live in; there's a high amount of takeaway food and it can be harder to stay active."
Dr Audehm said there were a lot of options in Hume for residents to stay active, including parks and leisure centres.
The survey showed that although overweight and obesity figures were high, 60.7 per cent of males and 46.2 per cent females engaged in sufficient physical activity in Hume.
