HUME'S chances of producing a tennis champion have improved with work beginning this month on a $10 million venue in Craigieburn.
The Hume Regional Tennis and Community Centre will have 24 tennis courts, host international tournaments and be a training ground for players.
The centre is a joint project of land developer Stockland, Hume Council, Tennis Australia and Tennis Victoria.
The five-hectare site, near the corner of Waterview and Marathon boulevards, will include a show court with arena seating.
It will also have a multi-use community centre that will include consultation rooms, a cafe and bar.
The centre will be available for private functions.
A family barbecue and children's play areas and sports medicine and physiotherapy clinics will also be on the site.
Hume mayor Ros Spence said the centre would cater for the municipality.
"The Hume Regional Tennis Centre will be a huge asset for the Craigieburn community and the entire Hume municipality," she said.
"Hopefully, the next Samantha Stosur and Rod Laver will learn the game right here in Hume."
Once complete, residents will be able to use the tennis courts for lessons or for casual, social games.
Tennis Australia has confirmed it will host a number of major national and pro-circuit events at the new centre, which is scheduled to open late next year.
