HUME residents will reap dividends from Honda's decision to keep its entire manufacturing and training facilities in the municipality, Honda Australia Motorcycle and Power Equipment (MPE) director Robert Toscano says.
The company officially opened its new operations centre on Friday at the former South Pacific Tyres plant at 170-180 Hume Highway in Somerton.
The new centre will house Honda MPE's parts warehouse, workshop and a lawnmower factory, which were previously based in Campbellfield.
The centre also has a rider training centre, which previously operated in Tullamarine.
Honda MPE also plans to relocate its head office, also in Campbellfield, to the new centre by the end of 2012.
The new centre offers more space than the previous site.
Mr Toscano said Honda MPE was pleased to have guaranteed the future of motorcycle and lawnmower production in Australia.
"We considered moving interstate or to other sites in Melbourne, such as Laverton, but we felt it was important to stay connected to the local area."
Mr Toscano said new jobs might be created as a result of the increase in size of the assembly warehouse.
They would likely be filled by people in the local area.
