Help at hand for troubled youth

25 Jan, 2011 12:00 AM
WHEN a young person arrested and interviewed by police has no parent or guardian available, they can count on the support of a caring community volunteer.

The youth referral and independent person program (YRIPP) arranges for a volunteer to sit in when young people are interviewed by police.

The volunteers provide the youth with information about their rights and refer them to other services for more help.

Reservoir resident Nadia Angeli has been a volunteer with the program since it began about seven years ago.

She attends call-outs to police stations in the northern suburbs, including Broadmeadows, Fawkner, Epping and Preston.

Ms Angeli said volunteering was a rewarding and fulfilling experience.

"Every case is different, every young person is different. Sometimes they make me laugh, sometimes they make me cry," she said.

"Giving young people referral options, that's a big focus for us, to not just let them go so that nothing changes in their life."

Ms Angeli saw an advertisement for the program and was curious to find out more.

She then attended an information session. Her message to others is to "give it a go", noting that young people were generally grateful and respectful volunteers were with them.

"You're helping young people when they are very vulnerable and in a situation that isn't fun.

"It's a role that needs to be done. It's a little bit of your time to go out and be with them and make sure they're looked after and not scared and alone."

The program works with more than 2500 young people a year in 108 police stations across Victoria.

The program's statewide co-ordinator, Vivianne Dias, said volunteers were there for young people at what could be a really scary time.

"YRIPP benefits the whole community by reducing police administration, improving community safety and providing vital support for young people and their families.
