MENTION the Royal Melbourne Show and most kids think of rides and showbags.
But Craigieburn's Madison and Georgia Derks will have only chooks on their minds at this year's show.
Last year Madison, 9, and Georgia, 7, entered the show's poultry competition for the first time and won first prize for Sparkle Clean, their grey Silkie.
They've entered three other competitions since, with mixed results. They hope to win more prizes at this year's event.
"I don't know what to expect from this year's competition, but I hope we can win it again," Madison said.
"We enjoy seeing the different types of chooks people bring out and we definitely have a good time." Mum Kelly said her daughters got hooked on breeding chooks after seeing how much fun their neighbours were having with the friendly-natured birds.
"Our neighbours had some chooks and said they were great, so we bought five of them while on a trip to Macclesfield.
"My husband Noel decided to enter some of them last year and now we're all keen on competing."
Mrs Derks said she would also enter some chooks at the show.
"We had such a great time last year and it's a really fun thing for a family to be involved in together," she said.
The show will run from September 18-28.
