Getting to know the neighbours

26 Jul, 2011 12:00 AM
BROADMEADOWS residents will get a unique opportunity to open a new chapter in neighbourliness at the Hume Global Learning Centre tonight.

The Sharehood is a concept which encourages people to get to know their neighbours and share resources with them.

Sharehood project officer Liz Shield says all people are welcome to attend.

"It's all about getting to know your neighbours, meeting them and sharing things with them," she says. "It can be a physical thing, like a lawn mower or tool or a skill like potting tomato plants, or how to make jam or walking your dogs together."

Ms Shield says the information session will help people learn how to make their neighbourhood into a 'sharehood'.

"You can register [online] the things you've got to share and what you're looking for. The website shows the closest 100 people to you. If there aren't any people who've joined in your area, we've got instructions on how you might get people in your area to join."

Broadmeadows Disability Service chief executive Barb van den Vlekkert said members were interested to learn more about 'sharehoods', as they planned to open up a tool library.

She said the tool library would be a facility for the community to use or borrow tools for the household.

"Some of our members are keen to work in there, to run it a couple of days a week," she said.

"And we thought The Sharehood was a good opportunity to find some volunteers or people getting rid of tools that we can use."

Details: Liz Shield, 0450 720 269.
