HUME residents have been urged to support a fund-raiser for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.
As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, Bunnings Warehouse at Broadmeadows will
host barbecues throughout the month with proceeds going to the PCFA.
Warehouse manager Aaron Newport hopes the event will help raise awareness of the impact of prostate cancer in the local and wider community.
"It's important to raise much-needed support for the foundation because prostate cancer affects so many men in Australia," Mr Newport said.
"We hope Hume residents come down to our store and get involved [in the barbecues] to help make a difference."
Also as part of the fund-raiser, the store will offer a gift-wrapping service.
In return for a gold coin donation, Hume residents will be able to have their Father's Day gift wrapped in the store. The will be available this Thursday through to Sunday.
The Victorian manager of PCFA, David Rhodes, said the barbecue events, to be held throughout the country, would encourage men above the age of 40 to get prostate check-ups at their local doctor.
"My wife and daughter have regular check-ups but us men seem to think less about our health," Mr Rhodes said.
"In 2010, almost 20,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 3300 men will die as a direct cause of prostate cancer. Men need to see their doctors early to get the right treatment."
Money raised from Prostate Cancer Awareness Month will go towards funding research for better treatment of the cancer.
