From shanty to a hint of luxury

CRAIGIEBURN Primary School pupils have moved from their old portable classrooms to a new state-of-the-art $2.2million building.

The building, which was officially opened by Calwell MP Maria Vamvakinou last week, houses the school's four grade6 classes and was funded under the federal government's Building the Education Revolution program.

Principal David Naismith says the new building is a major step for the school. About 100 pupils have already moved in.

"It's a lot more modern than the old portables," he said. "What we've got is fantastic."

Mr Naismith said the pupils were excited to use the building, which had environmental features.

"It's got all the environmentally friendly products in it. There are louvre windows, which open and close automatically, depending on the temperature.

"There's a weather station in the building as well. It shows the forecast temperature and how much water is in the water tank ... so the children can monitor the weather.

"Around the building we're putting in worm farms, vegetable plots and compost bins to complement the internal facility."

School captains Mai Ong Moua and Brett Albress are impressed by the new surrounds.

"We were all impressed by the airconditioning system which has self-opening windows that open in the hot and stay closed when it's cold," Mai said.

"The building will be a great asset for our school for many years to come."

Great news.

I wish Australians were more appreciative of the Labor Government's BER project.
