Disease a blind spot

09 Mar, 2010 09:43 AM
EXPERTS say 60 per cent of Australians who have glaucoma don't know it.

This week - Glaucoma Awareness Week - is aimed at increasing people's awareness of the disease, which is the second most common cause of blindness worldwide.

One out of every 80 people in Melbourne's population is likely to have this disease. Older people are more at risk, as are those who have glaucoma in their family history. More people are affected after the age of 40 and sufferers are predominantly men.

However, regular eye checks can help prevent glaucoma and medication is available.

Procedures such as laser surgery, as well as surgical operation, may be needed if the disease is severe.

OPSM's Dr Samantha St John said: "Often glaucoma is caused where the fluids behind the eye build up increasing eye pressure, or when the iris of the eye is covering the canal opening."

Overall, it is highly recommended that people over 40 get their eyes checked regularly.

By acting early, there's a higher possibility that doctors will be able to reduce the risk of contracting the disease.
