A CRAIGIEBURN man says a change to the disabled parking at the Broadmeadows shopping centre has wreaked havoc on his ability to park.
Vern Robinson, a paraplegic for 22 years, has been going to the centre for eight years to do his weekly banking.
But he said disabled parking spots now situated further away from the centre's entrance had made his trips difficult.
"I just reckon it's not fair that they've put the disabled parking there," he said.
"I feel it's a bad risk where they've put the disabled parks."
Mr Robinson said the parking changed midway through December when a top level was added at the shopping centre.
He said six disabled parks on the ground floor, which used to be in front of the centre's entrance, had been shifted to the back of the car park and 10 parks had been added to the top level with no ramp access.
"With the old [parking spots] they'd be about 10 metres away from the entrance. Where they've put them now, they're about 20 meters away. They've put a lift in to go to the top level, so that means a person in a wheelchair has to use a lift.
"What if there's a fire or an electrical fault? The lift will stop and you'll be stuck in there.
"I don't like using the lift in case there's a fire in the building."
Mr Robinson is also concerned there is no roof on the top level, leaving elderly, disabled people open to the elements.
"With the disabled parks on the top level, it's out in the weather and in the heat."
Mr Robinson has complained to centre management on two occasions but has not received a response.
''Frankly, I'd like to see a disabled park on the end of each aisle. Why should some people get more parking than others?"
Shopping centre management did not respond to the Weekly's request for comment.
