Community watch goes on the web

24 Aug, 2010 01:00 AM
POLICE in Hume have urged residents to get involved with the Neighbourhood Watch program, which has undergone major changes this year.

Hume's Neighbourhood Watch police co-ordinator, Sergeant Mary White, said the program, which started in Victoria in 1993, had failed to attract wide community interest in recent years.

She called on more people to join in the program and help make Hume a safer place to live.

"In July this year we decided we had to evolve and that meant grouping smaller Neighbourhood Watch groups together under larger municipality areas," Sergeant White said.

"Now we're hoping to engage with these members via the internet so they can access community information in real time."

Vice-chairman of the Hume Neighbourhood Watch program, Mustapha Rima, said he was pleased with support from the police in recent months.

"Under the changes police must be present at meetings, which is great because we need their help," Mr Rima said.

"But I still think more people should come along and there is a need for new groups to be formed in Craigieburn and Sunbury."

Sergeant White said a number of community safety information sessions would be organised to attract residents to get involved in the program.

"We hope to present sessions informing the community on hoon legislation and other road laws," she said.

"We're looking at the bigger picture and that means getting people involved in all different types of ways."

Anyone interested in the Neighbourhood Watch program can contact Sergeant Mary White on 93556046.
