The 38-year-old former basketball coach was arrested last Tuesday after police raided his home.

The 45 charges he faced include attempts to rape and take part in sexual penetration of a child, indecent assault, committing indecent acts and intentionally and recklessly causing injury.

The offences are alleged to have been committed between 1982 and last year. His name has been suppressed to protect the alleged victims, who include his brother, stepson, daughter, nephew, great-nephew and children who were friends of a former partner.

Detective Sergeant Paul Berry said nine victims had been identified and added that police were "investigating other leads."

Police said the victims identified were eight boys and one girl, ranging in ages from four to 18 at the time.

'They're pretty shocking allegations at the moment and we need to let the court process take its course," Detective Sergeant Berry said.

In the Melbourne Magistrates Court last Tuesday, Magistrate Susan Wakelin remanded the man for a committal mention hearing on April 9.

She also granted an application on the man's behalf to have a doctor examine him for injuries. The nature of the injuries was not mentioned in the court.
