Cars seized as hoons hit roadblock

16 Mar, 2010 04:00 AM
POLICE impounded 22 cars and issued 80 unroadworthy notices to drivers during a blitz on illegal drag-racing in Campbellfield.

Police from the Fawkner, Epping, Melton, Maribyrnong and Brimbank traffic management units checked 200 vehicles last Monday night.

Another five vehicles were impounded the next day.

The Environment Protection Authority handed out 33 notices for noise pollution and the Sheriff's Office recovered about $115,000 in outstanding fines.

Fawkner unit's Senior Sergeant Yvonne Upton said she was pleased with the results and warned motorists who were considering taking part in illegal drag-racing to "think again".

"This operation was intelligence-based and we were very much aware of the activities planned."

In the lead-up to the blitz, police covertly monitored the Campbellfield site, cordoned it off about 10pm with road blocks, and escorted every vehicle on site through a checkpoint.

"Let this be a warning," Senior Sergeant Upton said. "We take hooning seriously and we are on to you."

About 300 spectators were also walked through a checkpoint and each given penalty notices of about $200 by Hume Council.

"Hooning has been a problem in this area and last night's effort proves we are committed to getting these dangerous drivers off our roads," Senior Sergeant Upton said.

"Until everyone understands the dangers involved in this type of behaviour, we'll keep coming up with new ways to catch those doing the wrong thing."

Also during the blitz:

■Five disqualified drivers

and five unregistered vehicles were detected;

■29 penalty notices were distributed for unsafe vehicles;

■10 P-plate offences were detected relating to exceeding peer passenger restrictions.
